Yellow Under Stress

Erikson describes attention-seeking and excessive optimism as possible stress reactions in his Yellow profile. The color label does not establish why a particular person behaves that way.

THE IDEA

What Does a Yellow Do When He Gets Stressed and Feels Pressured?

Erikson portrays a stressed Yellow as seeking more attention and affirmation than usual. In his account, the person may talk too much and take over a discussion as a response to negative feelings.

Maybe you thought that this wasn’t possible, but he also runs the risk of becoming excessively and unrealistically optimistic. You’ve never experienced a real challenge until you’ve tried to cope with a truly stressed-out Yellow. He’ll come up with plans that are so wild and outlandish that not even he can believe them. Erikson interprets this as a coping response.

When to use it

  • Managing a team member who is a Yellow personality during a high-pressure project.

  • Coaching a Yellow colleague to recognize their stress triggers and develop healthier coping strategies.

  • Reviewing your own stress responses and checking whether increased talk or optimism is helping address the problem.

  • Designing team-building activities that reduce stress for Yellow personalities by providing positive affirmation in a structured way.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Excessive Attention-Seeking in a Meeting

During a pressured meeting, a team member repeatedly interrupts and proposes plans that exceed the available resources. Discuss the interruptions and test the plans’ assumptions rather than infer an ego motive from the behavior.

02

Unrealistic Optimism During a Crisis

When a project is failing, a colleague proposes a rapid turnaround but omits major constraints. Ask what evidence supports the schedule and what resources it requires. Optimism alone does not reveal the person’s reason for proposing it.

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. When someone became more talkative or optimistic under pressure, what did you observe and what did you merely infer about their motives?

  2. How can you support a stressed Yellow in a way that channels their need for attention into productive collaboration?

  3. What are the potential downsides of a stressed Yellow's unrealistic optimism, and how can you gently bring them back to reality without damaging their motivation?
