What Can I Do?
Ask what action you can take toward a goal, then use the answer to form a practical plan.
THE IDEA
Adopt the “What Can I Do” Question
Once you know what you want, ask what action would move you toward it. The “what can I do question” turns a general aspiration into something you can plan.
For a relationship goal, for example, ask “what can you do” today to strengthen the connection. The answer might be to make time for a conversation or show appreciation. The question is useful when it leads to a specific action you can take.
When to use it
When you feel stuck or overwhelmed about a goal, ask 'What can I do?' to break it into actionable steps.
At the start of each day, ask yourself what you can do to align your actions with your most important values or long-term objectives.
In a team meeting, encourage everyone to ask 'What can we do?' to turn abstract vision into concrete tasks.
When facing a personal challenge, ask 'What can I do right now?' to shift from passive worry to active problem-solving.
FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE
In practice
Improving a Relationship
If you want a great relationship, ask 'What can I do today to strengthen my connection with my partner?' This might lead to planning a date night, having a meaningful conversation, or showing appreciation.
Career Advancement
If you aim for a promotion, ask 'What can I do this week to increase my visibility and value at work?' This could involve taking on a new project, networking, or upskilling.
A MOMENT TO REFLECT
Put it to work.
What is one important goal you have right now? What can you do in the next 24 hours to move toward it?
In which area of your life (health, relationships, career, learning) do you most need to apply the 'What Can I Do' question today?
How does being purposeful change the way you feel about your daily actions and long-term aspirations?
