The First Control of the Enemy

Maintaining continuous pressure on an opponent forces them into a defensive posture, allowing you to control the situation and strike decisively. Adapt your rhythm and timing, and use deception to unsettle their spirit.

THE IDEA

THE FIRST CONTROL OF THE ENEMY

By keeping the pressure on the enemy, you will keep him constantly in a defensive posture. It is essential that you remain calm when initiating an attack. Your basic attitude should be of wanting to overwhelm him and unsettle his spirit. This will permit you to control the situation and make good your attack, the purpose of which is to destroy the enemy. You may appear strong and then deliver your cut through guile. It does not matter how you do it as long as you understand why you are doing it. Change your rhythm and change your timing if necessary. You may appear unresolved, but when you approach the enemy you must charge in with utter calm and purpose. You may wish to send the enemy a message implying your superior strength; when the enemy realizes his position, quickly go in for the kill. There are times when, although you are prepared to go right through the enemy, you lay back momentarily and then, without warning, leap in and through.

When to use it

  • Military offensives where sustaining pressure prevents the enemy from counterattacking.

  • Corporate competition where a company aggressively markets its products to keep rivals defensive.

  • Personal goal-setting where one consistently pushes forward to overcome inertia and obstacles.

  • Debates or arguments where controlling the pace and tone can sway the audience or opponent.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Negotiation Tactic

In a high-stakes business negotiation, keep the other side on the defensive by continually presenting new demands or information, maintaining a steady pace, and never giving them time to regroup. Vary your tone and arguments to keep them off-balance, then strike with your final offer.

02

Sports Strategy

A basketball team might use a fast-break offense to apply constant pressure on the opponent's defense, forcing quick reactions and mistakes. By alternating between fast and slow plays, they control the game's rhythm, unsettle the defense, and execute decisive attacks.

✳

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. How can you apply the principle of continuous pressure in a project you are currently leading?

  2. In what situations might maintaining constant pressure be counterproductive or create resistance?

  3. How do you balance the appearance of calm with the aggression needed to initiate an attack in a competitive environment?
