The Chemical Reaction

A chemical reaction is a thermodynamic process where reactants transform into products through the breaking and forming of chemical bonds, often involving energy changes. It produces new substances with different molecular structures, unlike physical changes that only alter state or form.

THE IDEA

THE CHEMICAL REACTION

Childbirth is a miracle. No, it’s not … It’s a chemical reaction, that’s all.

—Bill Hicks

A chemical reaction transforms reactants into products with different chemical structures. Bonds between atoms break or form, and the process can absorb or release energy. A reaction may start with a single substance or several substances.

Every chemical reaction has a transition state.

—Derek Barton

A physical change alters form or state without changing chemical identity. A chemical reaction changes the substances themselves. Ordinary chemical reactions rearrange electrons and bonds while leaving atomic nuclei unchanged; a chemical equation describes the reactants and products.

Reactions occur in nature, kitchens, laboratories, and industrial production. Rusting iron, burning wood, and cooking an egg are familiar examples.

When to use it

  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing: Synthesizing new drugs involves multiple controlled chemical reactions to create active ingredients from simpler compounds.

  • Food industry: Fermentation, baking, and preservation rely on chemical reactions like Maillard browning or enzymatic reactions to develop flavors and extend shelf life.

  • Environmental science: Understanding reactions like acid rain formation or carbon sequestration helps in developing strategies to mitigate pollution and climate change.

  • Materials engineering: controlling reactions that create polymers or alter the properties of a material.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Iron Rusting

Iron reacts with oxygen and water over time to form hydrated iron(III) oxide, commonly known as rust. This slow chemical reaction changes the metal's structure, weakening it and forming a brittle, reddish-brown compound.

02

Burning Wood

Combustion of wood is a rapid chemical reaction where cellulose and lignin break down in the presence of oxygen, releasing heat, light, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. The original wood is transformed into ash and gases.

03

Cooking an Egg

When an egg is heated, the proteins denature and coagulate, changing from a clear, liquid state to a white, solid one. This is an irreversible chemical change that alters the molecular structure of the egg's proteins.

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. Can you identify a chemical reaction happening in your kitchen right now? What are the reactants and products?

  2. How does distinguishing chemical changes from physical changes help in industries like recycling or materials manufacturing?

  3. Why might controlling the energy released or absorbed in a chemical reaction be crucial for safety in chemical plants?
