Remove Limiting Factors for Growth

Instead of trying to force growth through additional resources, identify and remove the factors that are restricting growth.

THE IDEA

In systems thinking, growth is often constrained by a single limiting factor, as in Liebig's Law of the Minimum. Identify and relieve this bottleneck to allow natural, sustainable growth, rather than pushing harder on all fronts.

When to use it

  • Improving a manufacturing process by identifying the slowest machine.

  • Enhancing personal productivity by eliminating distractions before adding more tasks.

  • Scaling a customer support team by fixing the most common issues first.

  • Growing a user base by simplifying the signup process instead of increasing ad spend.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Plant Growth Analogy

A plant's growth is limited by the scarcest resource: water, sunlight, or nutrients. Adding more water won't help if the soil lacks nitrogen. Identify the limiting factor and address it.

02

Business Bottleneck

A startup struggling to scale might assume they need more salespeople, but the real bottleneck could be a slow onboarding process or a complex product. Fix that first.

✳

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. What is currently the biggest bottleneck holding back your project or team?

  2. How can you identify the limiting factor in a complex system?

  3. When have you tried to push growth without first removing constraints?
