Putting Mental Models Into Perspective
Mental models provide a clearer picture of reality but are influenced by personal biases. To use them effectively, one must be aware of these biases to avoid flawed predictions.
THE IDEA
Chapter 11 Putting Mental Models Into Perspective
Mental models simplify reality. Experience helps build them, but can also make a familiar pattern seem applicable when it is not. Check the assumptions behind a model and compare its predictions with what happens.
“We all have mental models: the lens through which we see the world that drives our responses to everything we experience. Being aware of your mental models is key to being objective.”
- Elizabeth Thorton
A model’s usefulness depends on the situation and the question. Identify what it captures, what it leaves out, and where it has failed. A satisfying explanation still needs to fit the evidence.
For example, imagine that you were solving a complex math problem. You could go through hundreds of equations, but unless the right equation was applied to the problem, it would not yield a satisfying (or accurate) solution.
When to use it
Applying the right decision-making framework in a business strategy meeting to avoid bias.
Reflecting on personal life choices by checking if your mental model aligns with reality.
Using awareness of mental model limitations in problem-solving to improve accuracy.
Teaching others about the need to match mental models to specific situations.
FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE
In practice
Complex math problem
When solving a complex math problem, using the wrong equation can lead to an inaccurate solution, illustrating how mental models must be matched to the situation.
A MOMENT TO REFLECT
Put it to work.
What biases might be influencing your current mental model?
How can you identify when a mental model is not fitting the situation?
What are the strengths and limitations of the mental models you commonly use?
