Pretend He’s Invisible
A heuristic for dealing with people who crave attention (e.g., 'Yellows'): deliberately ignoring them to throw them off balance by making them feel invisible.
THE IDEA
Pretend He’s Invisible
You remember a Yellow’s driving impulse, right? “Look at me! Here I am!” If you want to get him off balance, simply make him feel invisible. If he’s not visible, then he doesn’t exist. He feels ignored and overlooked, and this is guaranteed to cause stress.
When to use it
Managing a disruptive team member who craves constant recognition by strategically withholding attention.
Negotiating with an overly confident counterpart whose need for validation can be leveraged to gain an upper hand.
Calming a heated argument by refusing to engage with the other person’s attention-seeking provocations.
Teaching assertiveness: helping someone understand how their own need for attention can be used against them.
FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE
In practice
Workplace Meeting
A colleague who dominates discussions for recognition is deliberately not acknowledged when they try to interrupt. The lack of response makes them uncomfortable and reduces their disruptive behavior.
Social Situation
At a party, someone who constantly seeks validation is given minimal eye contact and brief replies. Their need for attention goes unmet, causing them to recalibrate their approach.
A MOMENT TO REFLECT
Put it to work.
When have you seen someone’s need for attention be exploited by ignoring them? How did it affect their behavior?
What ethical considerations arise when using this tactic? Could it damage relationships in the long run?
How might you apply this heuristic to manage a team member who constantly seeks the spotlight?
