Opportunity Cost

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative foregone when making a choice, highlighting that every decision involves trade-offs. The concept is encapsulated by the phrase 'there is no such thing as a free lunch.'

THE IDEA

14. Opportunity Cost

Choosing one use of your time or resources means giving up another. Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative you forgo. Every choice has a cost: "there is nothing of the sort like a free lunch."

If you spend the time after lunch sending messages, you cannot also spend it writing a blog post. A large media campaign may use up the resources and risk tolerance needed for another campaign. Before deciding, identify the next best alternative and ask whether you are willing to give it up.

When to use it

  • Deciding between working overtime to earn extra money versus spending time with family.

  • Choosing whether to invest in stocks or pay off high-interest debt.

  • Allocating a limited marketing budget between social media ads and content creation.

  • Evaluating whether to attend a networking event or use that time for skill development.
