Logic Chopping
Using technical tools of logic in a pedantic manner by focusing on trivial details instead of directly addressing the main issue in a dispute.
THE IDEA
Logic Chopping
Logic chopping uses technical distinctions or excessive precision to avoid the main issue in a dispute. A detail is not irrelevant merely because it is small: the question is whether resolving it changes the argument or decision.
Example #1
The source describes Paul turning a request for assistance into a philosophical discussion, but does not include the original request or reply. The concern is using a diversion to leave the request unanswered.
Example #2
The original exchange is also absent. The source speculates about the speaker’s psychology, but that is unnecessary to assess whether an objection addresses the issue.
Application
Ask what difference the disputed detail makes. If it affects safety, scope, or the truth of a claim, examine it. If it merely delays answering the question, acknowledge it briefly and return to the point. Tact can help keep the discussion productive without requiring anyone to ignore a material error.
When to use it
In a debate, focusing on a minor definitional point instead of the main argument.
In a workplace meeting, nitpicking a presentation's formatting instead of discussing its content.
In personal relationships, arguing about the precise wording of an apology instead of addressing the hurt feelings.
In academic discussions, over-analyzing a trivial detail to avoid engaging with the core thesis.
FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE
In practice
Avoiding a request
As an illustration, Paul responds to a straightforward request for help with an extended discussion of the meaning of obligation. If the discussion leaves the request unanswered without raising a relevant concern, it illustrates avoidance through excessive abstraction.
Quibbling Over Wording
A team asks why a deadline was missed. A participant debates whether the delay should be called late or overdue without explaining what happened. The wording dispute is unhelpful unless it changes the responsibility or decision at issue.
A MOMENT TO REFLECT
Put it to work.
When is it better to show tact and restraint rather than being logically 'right'?
