Grip of Four Hands
When two equally matched opponents reach a stalemate, the grip of four hands represents the impasse. To break it, one must change tactics, timing, or approach, introducing an unexpected element to win decisively.
THE IDEA
To Release the Grip of Four Hands
When you and the enemy are of equal spirit and skill and neither of you can get the other to move, there is a standoff. This can result in deadly consequences. It is called the grip of four hands. It is foolish to stand there toe to toe and not be able to get the job done, which is to kill the enemy. If an impasse occurs, sneak something else into the combat and win decisively. Combat must never be a thing of pride or stubbornness. If you must change your method of attack, do so without hesitation. Change your timing, change your rhythm, change your approach. It does not matter who is stronger or who is faster. What matters is that you attain your goal. The Way of the warrior is to slay the enemy by cutting him down without delay. You must have utter resolve in order to do this and you must constantly sharpen your skills. Eventually you will understand the way to do things effectively and efficiently without stress or strain. Mislead the enemy, and then slay him with an unorthodox technique.

When to use it
Negotiations when both parties are deadlocked and neither is willing to concede.
Competitive sports where the game is tied and both teams have neutralized each other's usual tactics.
Military tactics when two forces are at a standoff and a flanking maneuver or deception is needed.
Product development when competitors copy features and a unique, unexpected innovation is required to gain an edge.
FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE
In practice
Business Stalemate
Two companies sell similar products and struggle to attract each other’s customers. One tests a subscription option with a group of customers to see whether different pricing changes demand. Changing the terms of competition offers a way out of the stalemate, though the experiment may fail.
Sports Match
In a tied soccer game, both teams have adapted to each other's formations. One coach unexpectedly changes to an aggressive attacking formation, catching the opponent off guard and scoring the winning goal.
A MOMENT TO REFLECT
Put it to work.
Think of a recent stalemate in your work or personal life. What new approach could you use to break the impasse?
How might pride or stubbornness be preventing you from changing your strategy in a current situation?
What 'unorthodox technique' could you introduce in a competitive scenario where you feel stuck?
