Mental Models

Environment

Your surroundings can shape habits, beliefs, and behavior. Noticing those influences can help you decide which to retain and which to change.

THE IDEA

Environment

Your surroundings can influence your habits, beliefs, and behavior. Notice which influences support your goals and which work against them. This gives you a basis for deciding what to adopt or reject and, where possible, what to change in your environment.

When to use it

  • When moving to a new city, being mindful of how the social and cultural environment might influence your habits and values.

  • In a team setting, intentionally designing the workspace and team norms to encourage collaboration and productivity.

  • When trying to break a bad habit, altering your physical environment to reduce triggers and reinforce positive behaviors.

  • When raising children, creating a home environment that promotes curiosity and learning while being aware of external influences from media or peers.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Choosing a positive work environment

An individual who works in a toxic office may adopt negative behaviors. By recognizing the environmental influence, they can choose to focus on positive aspects or seek a healthier workplace, thereby shaping their own professional growth.

02

Surrounding yourself with motivated peers

A student who studies in a group of dedicated learners is more likely to adopt strong study habits. Awareness of this environmental effect allows them to intentionally seek out such groups to improve their academic performance.

✳

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. How has your current environment shaped your behaviors and beliefs in ways you may not have noticed?

  2. What aspects of your environment could you selectively adopt or reject to better align with your goals?

  3. In what areas of your life could you make small environmental changes to foster positive growth?
