Be Prepared

Shed the idea of full predictability and prepare for all relevant eventualities, as unpredictability can be beneficial if you remain conscious of the limits of prediction.

THE IDEA

Be Prepared

Knowing that you cannot predict does not mean that you cannot benefit from unpredictability. Narrow-minded prediction has an analgesic or therapeutic effect—it numbs us with false certainty. Be aware of the numbing effect of magic numbers. Instead, be prepared for all relevant eventualities.

When to use it

  • Strategic business planning under uncertainty — building flexible strategies that work across different futures.

  • Personal financial planning — maintaining an emergency fund and diversifying income streams rather than relying on a single forecast.

  • Project management — using rolling wave planning or adaptive approaches to handle evolving requirements.

  • Disaster preparedness — creating evacuation plans, stockpiling supplies, and running drills to be ready for various natural or human-caused events.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Business Scenario Planning

A company stops relying on a single revenue forecast and instead develops multiple scenarios (optimistic, pessimistic, base case) with action plans for each. This prepares the organization for a range of outcomes rather than being blindsided by a missed prediction.

02

Diversified Investment Portfolio

An investor acknowledges that no one can perfectly predict market movements. Instead, they build a diversified portfolio across asset classes to be prepared for various economic conditions, reducing the impact of any single adverse event.

✳

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. What predictions or 'magic numbers' do you currently rely on that might create a false sense of certainty?

  2. How can you shift from trying to predict exact outcomes to preparing for multiple eventualities in a major project or decision?

  3. In what areas of your life (work, relationships, health) could adopting a preparedness mindset reduce stress and improve outcomes?
