Heuristics

Alternatives Heuristic

A decision-making heuristic that involves generating multiple distinct options or solutions to a problem, avoiding fixation on a single approach.

THE IDEA

Alternatives

The Alternatives heuristic encourages you to consider different approaches to a problem so you can expand the range of possible solutions and make more informed decisions. Examples include:

  • The two rectangular slices (see figure overleaf)
  • The cutting out of the small square
  • The diagonal cut

When to use it

  • Deciding on a career path by listing multiple options beyond the obvious ones.

  • Brainstorming product features to increase innovation.

  • Choosing a research methodology by comparing several approaches.

FROM THEORY TO EVERYDAY LIFE

In practice

01

Cutting Alternatives

In a problem about dividing a shape, three alternatives are: the two rectangular slices, cutting out a small square, or making a diagonal cut.

✳

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Put it to work.

  1. When facing a problem, what are the different alternatives you can consider?

  2. How can you ensure you generate a diverse set of alternatives?

  3. What assumptions might limit the range of alternatives you consider?
